Dr. Angela Iovino leads the tour group starting in Catania for two nights with accommodations by the sea, tour of the famous Villa Grande vineyard, the Etna volcano, the ancient city of the Greeks 7th century BC Syracuse, and Taormina. The third day we move to our villa in Ragusa Ibla, an historic, charming town known for it’s architecture and natural beauty in southeastern Sicily. Travelers will stay for 7 nights in an enchanting villa, with beautiful views, a swimming pool, close to beaches and all of the archeological sights. We will have a guided tour of Agrigento the largest area of Greek temples surviving in the world. Traveling to Palermo, we will visit the mountain town of Erice and the French medieval village of Monreale.  Each day travelers will have leisure time to visit thriving fishing villages, to hike through the hills, and kayak or sail. Angela will suggest meals at world-renown restaurants featuring delicious Sicilian cuisine.  This excursion will provide an in-depth understanding of the area’s architectural and historic importance to western civilization.  Optional Malta island guided tour cost $250 on June 29.

Orientation lunch with Dr. Angela Iovino will describe in detail the Italian Art and Architecture in its historical context. Venetian history, as an early Marine Republic bringing the East to Italy, fascinates the traveler as they absorb Venice’s particular light, Byzantine buildings, twisting canals, islands, and Palladian palaces. Arrive in Milan September 8 and enjoy an evening stroll before visiting the Duomo and its central neighborhood.  The next day you will view the artistic highlights of Milan including the Last Supper by Leonardo, the Brera Museum, its renaissance Palazzo Sforza and gardens. September 10 after a historic walk through Milan’s Monteleone district, we will board the train for Venice, see its famous collection of paintings, indulge in an evening at Piazza San Marco, ending with canal boat rides. September 11 and 12 city guides will provide historic walks through Venice’s famous neighborhoods to savor its particular cuisine and to view the city from many different waterways while afternoons are devoted to shopping, galleries and museums; September 13 we visit isle Murano where Venetian glass tradition was established and have dinner at Burano, another island.  September 14 we delight in a tour to Palladian villas. September 15 is a free day. Optional Opera Seminar – premier of Fidelio at Milan’s Teatro Alla Scala on September 9;La Traviata at Venice’s opera house La Fenice on September 11; and on September 15 Il Barbiere di Siviglia.  Jean Kellogg, George Mason University, leads daily seminar discussions deepening your understanding of the operas. Dr. Angela Iovino accompanies you through Milan and Venice to museums, secret squares, explaining the culture and history of each city.
